Tsukimi Burger
2010 November 8
Each year McDonald’s in Japan releases a popular limited time menu item, the Tsukimi Burger (月見バーガー, literally moon-viewing burger), available only during Autumn. The Tsukimi Burger is a hamburger that contains a poached egg with the yolk representing the moon on an egg white sky, a hamburger patty, bacon and a special teriyaki-like sauce. The year 2010 marks the 20th year anniversary of this seasonal specialty burger.

This article is a submission for the Japan Blog Matsuri hosted by Surviving in Japan with the theme “Fall is the season for eating (食欲の秋)”.

Did you see today’s Boondocks? This reminded me of that.
lol
Why is McDonalds advertising rabbit? I noticed the rabbit sitting on the big `M` sign munching on a burger. Can`t say i`ve seen a rabbit eating a cow in the wild! The again the flying rabbit was a bit different too! lol
In Japan, it’s believed there are rabbits on the moon making mochi! haha and since this burger comes out during the moon-viewing season, McDonald’s uses rabbits on their ad
Ahhhhh interesting! I could have spent years trying to research about why there is a rabbit there! Cheers! I know we use rabbits for easter (easter bunny and eggs) due to an old Pagan sex ritual/festival…rabbits being the best breeding species in the world. Like a rabbit!
The Western perception is that there is a man in the moon based upon an imaginary figure resembling a human face.
In Japanese folklore (and Chinese and Korean) they believe there is a rabbit making mochi (rice cake) based upon markings on the moon that look like a rabbit.
Oh I didn’t know Chinese and Korean people have the same perception as the Japanese! I’ve heard the Chinese believe that there’s a crab on the moon.
I should quote my sources.
Wikipedia, not sure how reliable this information is.
Looks good to me. Will put this down as 2nd on my list of burgers to try in Japan. Whale burger being No.1 of course.
